There Really Is A Dog

(Jack Kennedy)
There Really Is A Dog

How do dogs know when their master is coming?
Do they hear certain sounds in the noise and the humming?
Do they hear how you breathe and the smack of your lips?
Do they hear your bones creak and the way your heart skips?
But how can they do this from two miles away
when the time that you come home is different each day?
Is it something they feel, is it something they smell
that sets off an alarm in their head their like a bell?
Are they like the Jedi and attuned to The Force?
Do they have a sixth sense like an Arabian horse?
Is their tail an antennae fine-tuned to vibrations
that waft through the air like FM oscillations
transmitted whenever we think about home
and the friend that we left there all day all alone?
Are dogs somehow plugged in to the whole cosmic dance
and just know how to interpret the world in a glance?
Or are dogs really Gods and completely omniscient
and, instead, it is us who are somewhat deficient
at figuring out which way the wind blows
and accepting the world that’s in front of our nose?
