Jack Kennedy: Music

I Will Stay With You

(Jack Kennedy)
This song was a runner up winner in the American Songwriter Magazine contest in summer of 2003.

An earlier version of this song was played in a song-writing class with Michael Smith at the Old Town School of Folk Music. Michael listened intently with his eyes closed. When I finished singing the song, he asked me to sing the first verse again. I repeated the verse, and then waited through a long silence. He then he asked if he could borrow my guitar. When he started playing, the tone and feeling he elicited from the guitar was so enchanting that I forgot it was my song he was playing. Then he sang the first verse and refrain as if he were already familiar with the song......Without criticizing, he asked me several questions about what I wrote. Those questions became focal points that helped me bring this song into sharper focus.
(Thank you, Michael, for opening my ears in so many ways...)
I Will Stay With You

When it’s late in December and it’s 20 below
When there’s frost on the window and blankets of snow
When the night falls so quick and the fire burns low
I will stay with you

When the first day of spring melts the snow up above
When the crocus appear and the robin and dove
When we don’t need a hat or a coat or a glove
I will stay with you

Brushed with the color of seasons
Your picture filling my view
Each year bringing more reasons
To spend another with you.

When the rain falls in summer and chicks learn to fly
When the call of the loon ends a day in July
When the light of the full moon collects in your eye
I will stay with you

When the leaves of the trees turn to hues sublime
When the burning bush blazes after summertime
When I taste your desire and the sweet nouveau wine
I will stay with you

Brushed with the color of seasons
Your picture filling my view
Each year bringing more reasons
To spend another with you.
